Responsibilities

Summary:

The Senior Refrigeration Mechanic independently performs advanced troubleshooting, repair, installation, and preventive maintenance of industrial refrigeration and facility systems. This role serves as a technical resource to refrigeration mechanics and operators, supports safe and reliable operation of ammonia refrigeration systems, and helps ensure work is completed in accordance with applicable safety, environmental, and Process Safety Management requirements.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Diagnose and repair complex ammonia refrigeration, mechanical, and electrical systems.
  • Inspect, test, and monitor refrigeration equipment for safe and reliable operation.
  • Perform advanced repairs on compressors, condensers, evaporators, pumps, vessels, valves, and piping.
  • Support equipment startup, shutdown, lockout/tagout, and return-to-service activities.
  • Perform preventive and predictive maintenance on refrigeration and facility systems.
  • Install, maintain, and troubleshoot electrical, controls, and instrumentation components.
  • Plan work activities, identify required parts and tools, and coordinate repairs.
  • Maintain accurate CMMS records, including repairs, inspections, and failure analysis.
  • Provide technical guidance and troubleshooting support to mechanics and operators.
  • Support PSM, mechanical integrity, emergency response, and continuous improvement initiatives.

 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school; or at least 5 years of progressively responsible industrial refrigeration, mechanical, or related maintenance experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience independently troubleshooting and repairing industrial ammonia refrigeration systems and associated mechanical, electrical, and control components.
  • Ability to meet site requirements for respiratory protection, emergency response, lockout/tagout, and other required safety programs.

  

Preferred Education & Experiences:

  • Five or more years of industrial ammonia refrigeration experience in food manufacturing, cold storage, seafood processing, or a similar industrial environment.
  • RETA Certified Industrial Refrigeration Operator (CIRO) or Certified Assistant Refrigeration Operator (CARO) certification; CIRO preferred.
  • Experience with Process Safety Management and mechanical integrity programs for ammonia refrigeration systems.
  • Experience using CMMS, industrial controls, variable-frequency drives, and refrigeration system monitoring or trending tools.
  • Experience mentoring or providing technical direction to mechanics, operators, or contractors.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

  • Advanced knowledge of industrial ammonia refrigeration system operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and safe work practices including required permits.
  • Ability to interpret piping and instrumentation diagrams, electrical schematics, equipment manuals, control sequences, and technical specifications.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and control-system problems and identify root causes.
  • Working knowledge of compressors, evaporators, condensers, pumps, vessels, valves, piping systems, motors, sensors, and associated controls.
  • Ability to recognize abnormal operating conditions, evaluate risk, and take appropriate action within established procedures and authority.
  • Ability to plan work, identify parts and tools, coordinate equipment outages, and communicate handoffs and follow-up needs clearly.
  • Ability to coach and support less-experienced employees while maintaining accountability for safety, quality, and procedural compliance.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Safety, contractors, managers, and technicians.
  • Ability to document work accurately and communicate technical information verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize competing demands, and respond effectively to urgent equipment issues.

 

Work environment:

The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and extreme cold. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

 

Work Ability Requirements:

Ability to work around a production line with machinery and moving parts.

Pay Range

USD $39.00 - USD $46.00 /Hr.
